A total of 68,435 houses in Perambalur district are without individual toilets. With a view to bring about total sanitation in villages, toilets will be built in all these houses under various schemes.

As many as 18,092 toilets would be built under Nirmal Bharath Abhiyan and Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS) and 50,343 toilets would be built under MNREGS.

Darez Ahmed, District Collector, conducted a meeting of village panchayat presidents to discuss the construction of individual toilets in the district in Perambalur on Friday. He said the government gave awards to panchayats that had achieved total sanitation.

Many village panchayat presidents played an important role in building individual toilets in all houses in the village and got awards in the past. Sanitary complexes in Perambalur district had been renovated and maintained properly. The Collector advised village panchayat presidents to inculcate the habit of washing hands among children. This would prevent various diseases.

He asked the presidents to take steps to see that water did not stagnate in the villages as northeast monsoon would soon set in.
