SGM to defer AGM?

SGM to defer AGM?
Srinivasan to attend the meeting of his loyalists in Chennai today.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) may call for a Special General Meeting (SGM) to defer the Annual General Meeting (AGM). The loyalists of N Srinivasan, who are meeting in Chennai on Sunday, will explore all options - legal and constitutional -- to ensure the re-election of their leader.

Incidentally, Srinivasan, who is barred to function as board president by the Supreme Court, himself will be attending the meeting as it is not an official BCCI platform.

An associate of the Chennai strongman said that SGM is an option. “If we have to postpone the AGM, it has to be done without contravening the constitutional provisions. The decision should not be in breach of the rule of law,” he said. He also confirmed that Srinivasan will be there.

Another alternative before the Srini camp is to knock of the doors of the registrar of Tamil Nadu Societies without whose permission the AGM - which otherwise mandatorily has to be held before September 30 - cannot be postponed. The impression is that the registrar should have no objection to the postponement.

There is a school of thought that the working committee can authorise the deferment of the AGM but the Srini group does not want to take chances. An SGM is a general body in itself and its mandate is deemed to be irrefutable.

The meeting, expectedly, will be attended by some legal luminaries who will be advising the members on how to go about in the matter.

Meanwhile, at least 18 state units are expected to attend the meeting among whom are a few influential and powerful associations. Jagmohan Dalmiya may not be physically present there but his representative (Subir Ganguly) is flying to Chennai just as the envoy of Arun Jaitley, who is convalescing in a Delhi hospital. The Central minister was never expected to attend that meeting anyway but Sneh Bansal, a close aide of Jaitley, will be present.

Even the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) will be represented although it is widely perceived that the MCA chief Sharad Pawar is the leader of the rival camp. MCA vice-president Ravi Savant is believed to have gone to Chennai already.

A few associations like Hyderabad and Tripura - Hyderabad is having its own AGM and Tripura Cricket Association is having problems with the State government -- may skip the meeting but Srinivasan can always take their support for granted.
