BERHAMPUR: For Satyapriya Choudhary, teaching is a way of life. Though she retired in 2009, her daily routine has not changed much. She has been working as a guest faculty at a primary school at Lanjipalli here since 2010.
"I teach students of Class I and II," she said. The school administration offered her some remuneration, but she declined. Instead, she buys pencil and notebooks for poor and needy students of the school from her pension.
"I am grateful to the school management for allowing me to teach here," she added.
There are around 150 students, studying from Class I to V, in the school.
"The regular teachers may not arrive in time, but Choudhary didi is always punctual," said a management committee member.
In 2010, the then Ganjam collector V Karthikeyan Pandian had appointed 20 guest teachers, who had offered to teach after retirement. "Some of them have left the profession because of ill health and other reasons. My love for teaching keeps me going," said Choudhary.
She said it is impossible for her to think of life without going to a classroom. "I will continue teaching till my health permits," said the 63-year-old.
Wife of a retired professor, Choudhary said she belongs to a family of teachers. "My father-in-law, two sisters-in-law and two daughters are into teaching. My husband, a mathematics teacher, taught till he breathed his last," she said. "My sister-in-law Usharani, a national award winner teacher, also rendered free service for some years after her retirement," she added.
