The city is one big fair these days. With Onam just a couple of days away, there is a lot of activity around and shopping tops the list.

People from at least three districts are thronging the city for last-minute purchases. All major shopping centres in the city, especially S.M. Street and the many textile outlets, have been witnessing heavy rush. The shoppers are spoilt for choice as the city is hosting many fairs.

The IRDP-SGSY-Kudumbasree Onam fair at Jubilee Hall, Kandamkulam, is where one can find rustic products of the State. One can get traditional vegetables such as Vazhakoombu and Unnipindi; Manga Inchi preparation; and snacks of yore. The handicraft products showcased by self-help groups too are attractive.

A Kudumbasree fair is on at Muthalakkulam. For those looking for Onakkodi, the Rajasthan Grameen Mela at Comtrust Ground, the Kairali Onam Mela at Jaya Auditorium and the Onam Handloom Expo on Pavamani Road offer a wide choice.

The vegetable market at Palayam is also abuzz with activity.

High prices

The high prices of flowers and vegetables are a dampener. Another feature of the city these days is unending traffic blocks. Traffic congestion has increased with people from across the district and neighbouring ones converging at places such as Meenchanda, Palayam, Nadakkavu, Eranhipalam, Mavoor Road, and Arayidathupalam.

The situation is expected to worsen in the coming days with most people using private vehicles.
