Students protesting for new college building lathicharged
SIRSA: Police resorted to lathicharge to disperse students of the girls' wing of Government National Post-Graduate College when they encircled the deputy commissioner on Thursday.
They girls had blocked national highway-10 for four hours on Wednesday at Laal Batti chowk demanding construction of a new building for the hostel. The project was announced by chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda during his visit to Sirsa a year ago.
The students alleged that despite repeated protests by them, authorities were apathetic towards their demand. They boycotted classes on Thursday and marched toward the DC's residence.
The girls alleged that more than 1,350 students are forced to study in a dilapidated building built in 1937. DC Anshaj Singh came out of his residence and assured students that their demands will be met soon.
On the contrary to claims of police lathicharge on students, DSP Dharamvir Singh said that nothing of the sort happened that cops only dispersed the protesters. "Those taken in custody were outsiders," the officer said.
