NAGPUR: The tall claims of the forest department about covering open farm wells around wildlife areas again proved to be false when a leopard cub died after falling in a well in Parsheoni forest range under Nagpur division on Wednesday.
Nagpur division deputy conservator of forests Deepak Bhatt confirmed the incident occurred at Bhagemari (Tamaswadi) village.
The leopard cub was 8-9-months-old and is suspected to have fallen in the farm well while chasing some prey.
"A monkey was also found dead in the well, which had a lot of water," said Bhatt. After panchnama and post mortem the putrefied carcass of the leopard was cremated.
On Wednesday night, there were rumours that the leopard that died at Parsheoni was the one rescued and released from a well from Khairi (Panjabrao) near Khapa. However, Khapa range forest officer (RFO) RM Ghadge rejected the rumours spread by striking forest employees.
"Our men are patrolling forest areas near Khapa and the rescued leopard has returned to Saleghat area of Mansinghdeo sanctuary," said Ghadge.
