BANGALORE: Young poet Kavya P Kadame feels a flood of new writing has lent a competitive edge to Kannada literature.
“I feel privileged to be born in these times,” says the 26-year-old who has been chosen for the Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar 2014 for her collection of poems, Dhyanakke Thaarikina Hangilla. She is among the 21 awardees from different Indian languages.
Says Kavya, who shifted to New Jersey two years ago after marriage, “Seasons, emotions, incidents and things I come across every day -- anything which has an unwritten poem in it – inspire me.’’
There are no dearth of muses for Kavya in the US too. “I read a lot of Kannada books along with English literature. Pratibha Nandakumar and Arif Raja's poems are always my inspiration. The libraries I visit in the US have introduced me to a lot of new thought.”
Like other new-generation writers, Kavya finds technologies like social media and websites enabling. “It has bridged the gap between poets and critics and between poets themselves. This is an open world now and anybody can read anyone’s poems. I feel self-publishing is a boon to new poets.”
But does not technology-induced exchanges likes chats and posts stunt language? “The language of poetry is totally different from the language of chats and status updates. I believe the language of poetry evolves with time. Today's poetry is a transformed form of ancient kaavyas. We all write about the same truths of life, but in the transformed language. I believe that is the beauty of reading modern poems.”
Kavya is now ready with her first novel. “I never thought of writing prose before. While I was reading Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes and Mohanaswamy by Vasudhendra, I started thinking of the subject of my novel. It started growing in me by itself,” she adds.
