Seven cooks, cobbler, barber in CBI chief’s security cordon

A senior ITBP officer, who did not want to be named, said as per their present records, only 12 ITBP men were posted at Sinha's residence.

Seven cooks, a cobbler and a barber are among the 22 security personnel drawn from the ITBP to guard CBI Director Ranjit Sinha’s official residence, according to a July 2013 list prepared by the CBI.

These personnel were given cash rewards by the CBI for their “performance of dedicated hard work and sincerity, even beyond office and holidays without caring for their personal comforts” in July last year.

While the constables posted as cooks were rewarded Rs 1,000 each, an inspector on general duty received Rs 3,000 and two head constables were given Rs 1,800 each. The names of three water carriers are also in the list, accessed by The Indian Express.

ITBP officials said their personnel were taken by Sinha when he was transferred from the ITBP where he was the DG. Speaking to The Indian Express, Sinha asserted there was nothing unusual “for personnel belonging either from ITBP or CRPF being deputed for other functions”.

A senior ITBP officer, who did not want to be named, said as per their present records, only 12 ITBP men were posted at Sinha’s residence. “The men were provided for his security. It is up to him to use them in whatever capacity he deems fit. Moreover, our cooks and cobblers are also provided training regularly. They can pick a gun if the need arises and protect the person whom they are assigned to protect,” the officer said. On Thursday, when The Indian Express visited CBI Director’s residence at 2 Janpath Road, there was a lone ITBP guard at the gate.
