With APTEL stay, Tata Power plans in city hit fresh hurdle

The Appellate Tribunal for Electricity (APTEL) on Thursday imposed an interim stay on the state electricity regulator’s decision to allow Tata Power Company to supply to all categories of consumers in Mumbai, removing any restrictions it had placed earlier on the firm’s network expansion.

The APTEL decided to grant an interim stay based on an appeal filed by Reliance Infrastructure, which distributes electricity to Mumbai’s suburbs. The company had appealed challenging the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission’s (MERC) order granting distribution license to Tata Power Company with the permission of using the network laid down by Reliance.

The MERC had earlier placed restrictions on Tata Power’s network expansion after Reliance had contended that the company was deliberately cherry picking by selectively laying its network to supply to high-end consumers, and Reliance in turn was being left with only low-end residential customers.

The appeal has been posted for final hearing on October 10.

Greenwood High School and Riverside International School shared the award for the best delegation at Asia’s largest mock United Nations Convention, 2014, Indian International Model United Nations (IIMUN), held between August 14 and 17. Guests included chief of education outreach for the United Nations Nathalie Leroy, Suresh Prabhu, MP Manish Tewari. Director Abbas Tyrewala and actor Imraan Khan spoke to students on the role of youth in India’s development. The students were also addressed by Congress leader Shashi Tharoor.

Stock broker ‘commits suicide’ at Breach Candy residence

The secretary of the J J Group of Hospitals Trust allegedly committed suicide in his south Mumbai residence on Wednesday night. The police are investigating whether a property dispute drove Rasheid Taleyearkhan (69) to take the extreme step. Rasheid lived with his son Jamie (33) at an apartment in Bhulabhai Desai Road, Breach Candy. Both worked as directors at stockbroking firm MacGregor Technologies Pvt Ltd. “On Wednesday night, Jamie returned home to find the front door locked from inside. Jamie with the help of domestic servants broke open a window and gained access into the house. He found his father lying dead with a bullet in his chest. A case of accidental death has been registered at the Gamdevi police station. A postmortem was conducted at JJ Hospital,” said Krishna Prakash, ACP, South region.
