70 go missing as flash floods wash away bus in J&K

The bus carrying a marriage party was on its way from Pata village to Laam in Naushera sector.

At least 70 people went missing on Thursday after the bus they were travelling in was washed away flash floods in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajauri district.

At least 70 people went missing on Thursday afternoon after the bus they were travelling in was washed away flash floods. The accident happened in the Laam area of Naushera sector along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir.

According to J&K Police, the passengers were part of a marriage party and were on their way from Pata village to Laam in Naushera.

“The water channel in which their vehicle fell was flooded and it washed away the bus. Police teams including our officers are at the spot right now but we have no information about the dead or the rescued,” a police spokesperson told The Hindu .

There have been incessant rains since Sunday across most parts of Jammu and Kashmir and many areas in south and central Kashmir are flooded and so are many parts of the Srinagar city.

The State has been put on high alert as the Jhelum was flowing much above the danger mark and authorities said the State may witness its worst floods in decades.

“We are witnessing a massive flood approaching. The rains are not stopping and water levels are consistently rising,” Chief Engineer of Irrigation and Flood Control Kashmir, Javed Jaffer, said.

Several villages in Kashmir are under water with people being rescued by boats.

In different accidents since Tuesday, more than 12 people have been killed in the floods.
