Graham Reid new Kookaburras head coach

Hockey Australia is the latest sporting team to conduct an international search for the best possible new coach before announcing that an existing assistant has been elevated to the top job.

In saying that, the credentials of new Kookaburras head coach Graham Reid can't be argued. He was at the helm of the team during its recent successful Commonwealth Games campaign in Glasgow and did his six year apprenticeship under the legendary Ric Charlesworth.

Hockey Australia chief executive Cam Vale said when announcing the appointment that although the process was lengthy, "it is quite a complicated and detailed way to get there, but it's well worth it, because you walk away extremely confident that the future is in good hands".

Vale said that the brief was simply to find the best coach available and that he was confident that is what they have done.

Reid has a couple of issues to work through before he turns his attention to the Kookaburra's next major international tournament, the Champions Trophy in Bhubaneswar, India, in December.

Discussing the future of Jamie Dwyer and fellow assistant coach Paul Gaudoin are high on the list.

Reid said he would be sitting down with both men very soon to discuss their involvement going into this new era.

Gaudion co-coached the men's national side in Scotland alongside Reid and was one of the three candidates shortlisted for the senior role.

Dwyer was controversially out of that Commonwealth Games team.

"Yeah, look, that's something that we need to chat to Cam and our high performance director about, but look, we worked very well together, proved at the Commonwealth Games and I think that it's important that I have someone who is a strong person that challenges me and I would love for Paul to stay on," Reid said.

"But of course he is going to be disappointed and that's an understandable thing and that will play out in the next week.

"I will be sitting down with Jamie, as I will be with all the players, and having a chat about his future and what he wants to do in hockey so it's a bit hard to tell at this point.

"He has been left home before, as our current captain Mark (Knowles) has been left out before. So it's a common thing.

"He was told and given pre-notice. He certainly wasn't dropped. As I said to him straight after, very happy to sit down and work out the future."

That future for Dwyer may even include joining the coaching staff if it's decided that it's best the he won't continue as a player.

Dwyer's chances of being a part of the team in India in December for the Champions Trophy may not be great either, as Reid said that he would consider taking a young team to Bhubaneswar, with an eye on Rio and Olympic Games in 2016.

And while the personnel may change on the field in the next couple of years, Reid said the processes and philosophies surrounding the team wouldn't.

"As far as tactically, we're playing some very nice hockey. It would be hypocritical of me to come in and change the way we play too much," Reid said.

"I've identified a number of the tactical things we need to be looking at. There's always things in hockey you can improve.

"To follow in Ric Charlesworth's footsteps is definitely an interesting challenge. He's someone who transcends our sport and he has a list of accomplishments as long as your arm. But I relish that challenge and look forward to doing it.

"Ric's a very philosophical style of coach. He'll quote Shakespeare and that sort of thing. I tend to use my business background a bit more. I'll probably quote Steve Jobs and Jim Collins.

"I would have to say I'm a little bit more of a joker. One of the interesting things with working with Ric, because it's very hard to have someone who is the same voice as Ric, so I have been able to provide a different personality, if you like, to Ric."
