An 18-year-old girl, who had won several national-level sports championships, was killed after being hit by a car in Hauz Khas on Monday. The erring driver, who initially drove away after hitting the victim, later surrendered herself.

The victim was returning from Kamla Nehru College, where she studied, and was crossing a road when the accident happened.

According to the police, around noon when Deepti was crossing the August Kranti Marg close to her college, a silver coloured Polo, being driven at a very high speed, hit her. However, the driver could not control even then and Deepti came under the wheels of the car.

It was around the same time that Kalkaji resident Pankaj Dheer was passing through the same stretch on his way to Gurgaon. In his statement to the police, Mr. Dheer said that there were few vehicles on the road at that time and with the help of one passer by, he rushed the girl to a hospital and made a call to the Police Control Room. The eyewitness had also noted down the registration number of the car.

However, the errant vehicle had left the spot before the police could reach.

The girl was declared brought dead at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences. A case under Section 304-A (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 279 (rash and negligent) driving was registered at the Hauz Khas police station.

The driver was identified as Jangpura resident Nalini Agrawal. Ms. Agrawal surrendered herself and was granted bail.

A resident of Sultanpur Colony, Deepti is survived by her parents and two brothers. Her father Upendra Shastri is the principal of Saraswati Vidya Mandir School at Jhandewalan. Deepti had won 40 medals and certificates in various national-level sports championships.
