Tekken Series Director Shows Project Morpheus VR Headset 'Summer Lesson' Demo

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge
VR headset is a work in progress

Tekken series director Katsuhiro Harada gave a demonstration of Sony's Project Morpheus virtual reality headset at the Sony Computer Entertainment Japan Asia Press Conference 2014 event on Monday. Harada shows the headset working with the "Summer Lesson" demo software.

Katsuhiro Harada: This Morpheus Summer Lesson uses the Morpheus' functions in order to give a sense of reality to the character. It works so that even the person wearing it can't tell the difference between reality and the image.
Text: Thoughts from someone who tried it out - She was so close up that my heart was beating fast.
Harada: This Summer Lesson demo is a game in which the character recognizes the player that is inside of the space.
Text: Thoughts from someone who tried it out - That feeling of having the character "right there" is amazing... It's completely different from looking at a screen.
Harada: It almost appears that this character exists within this space. However, we're doing setting right now so more characters can be added. You'll be able to meet a lot of different characters within this space.
Text: Thoughts from someone who tried it out - I just want to be here forever now!
Text: Only the people who have met her understand this sense of reality...
Harada: We'll be doing it at TGS as well, so please try it out there, and this wonder... I want to convey it to everyone, so please come to TGS.
Girl: When it's summer, bring me out somewhere.

The device is not a final product, but a work in progress. Shūhei Yoshida, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios said during a presentation at this year's Game Developers Conference (GDC) on Tuesday that "virtual reality is the next innovation from PlayStation that will [shape] the future of games."

Currently, the developer kits for the headset have a 1080p output display, 360-degree head tracking, a 90-degree field of view, PlayStation Move and DualShock 4 support, and a spatial sound system.
