The cost of a gallon of gasoline in Denver on Monday was 18 cents higher than the national average, a trend that started several weeks ago.
For most of the year, prices in Denver were far lower than the national average.
The cost of a gallon in Denver on Monday was $3.61 while the average cost nationally was $3.43 a gallon, according to GasBuddy.com.
Prices in Denver Monday were 9.1 cents a gallon higher than the same day one year ago and 4.2 cents a gallon higher than a month ago.
However, the average retail gasoline price in Denver fell 1.5 cents a gallon in Denver in the past week.
Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy said that with the summer driving season coming to a close, the average cost of a gallon of gasoline will soon begin to decline.
He said the cause will be falling demand and a shift away from expensive summer blends of gasoline.
However, in a statement, he added that there could be some impact from “ever changing geopolitical tensions” and hurricane season.
