Famous Migrants Who Conquered India's Heart


BANGALORE: In today’s world, people are wandering around the globe seeking jobs, shelter, better opportunities, and amenities. Sometimes luck bestows upon them and the country they travel to becomes their new home. India too has several immigrants from neighboring countries that made this country as their own and made it proud by creating histories.

Mahashay Dharmapal Gulati: This famous entrepreneur, commonly known as the MDH man, reigns supreme in the spice industry of India. He is prominent enough to be seen in each advertisement of the MDH spices; MDH stands for “Mahashian Di Hatti”.

Mahashay Dharampal Gulati was born and brought up in Sialkot, a city in northeast Punjab province of Pakistan. As Gulati gave up schooling before his fifth standard exam, he started working at a very young age. In 1919, his father sold spices from a shop called ‘Mahashian Di Hatti.”

On September 7, 1947, Gulati, along with his family reached a refugee camp in Amritsar, 23 years old then, he then came to Delhi for work. Later he set up a spice shop at Ajmal Khan Road in Delhi and started his own spice business that presently is a known brand in every single household. Named MDH, it is now a 500 crore business.
