Taiwan's UMC seeks auto-biz boost via Fujitsu chip plant investment

TAIPEI -- Looking to win more orders for chips used in automobiles, leading Taiwanese semiconductor maker United Microelectronics Corp. will resume production in Japan by investing in Fujitsu's plant in Kuwana, Mie Prefecture.

UMC will invest 5 billion yen in Fujitsu's plant in Kuwana, Mie Prefecture.

     The Hsinchu-based UMC announced it will form a chipmaking venture with Fujitsu in the first quarter of 2015, into which it will pump 5 billion yen ($47.5 million) to acquire a 9.3% stake.
