162 sheep die after truck crash near Toodyay
More than 160 sheep have been killed in a truck rollover on the outskirts of Toodyay.
Police say the truck, laden with almost 400 sheep, failed to take a bend last night on Julimar Road, about five kilometres out of town.
The driver was taken to Northam hospital, where the Country Health Service says he is in a stable condition.
Sergeant Warren Conder says 172 sheep survived, 46 ran away and 162 died. About half died during the accident and the rest were put down.
"At the end of the day, it's sad to see sheep suffer this type of fate but at least the driver's alive," he said.
"That's a plus as well ... and there was more sheep survived than dead.
"We had the vet on site straight away. In fact, she was probably the second or third person at the scene.
"She will re-attend the property where the sheep are being housed overnight, just one of the local farmers has offered to look after the sheep overnight, so she'll pop out and check on the sheep again."
