A teenage marathon swimmer was all smiles Monday after she pushed her way through the night to successfully complete her swim across Lake Erie.

Slipping into the water at 11:37 p.m. on Sunday, it took 16-year-old Annaleise Carr 12 hours and 12 minutes to finish a 30-kilometre swim, the second leg of her marathon.

The Walsh, Ont. native completed the first leg of her journey in July, swimming from Erie, Pennsylvania to Long Point, Ont. – roughly the length of 1,500 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

Stormy conditions prompted her to halt her marathon swim until the water was calmer.

Carr was swimming to fundraise money for Camp Trillium, a camp and support centre for children with cancer. This summer she has raised more than $190,000.

Plenty of supporters greeted Carr on the beach at Port Dover and those who could not be there in person shared their well-wishes on social media.

“Congratulations Annaleise! Once again you have proven that your ‘don’t give up’ spirit is something we all should adopt,” wrote Shelley Thompson Wenige on Facebook. “You make Norfolk County proud.”

It’s also not the first major swim achievement for Carr. In 2012, she made Canadian history becoming the then-youngest person to swim across Lake Ontario. That record has since been broken by 14-year-old Trinity Arsenault from St. Catharines, Ont.
