CBI quizzes ex-official in Laxmi Vilas Palace hotel sale case

The CBI has begun investigation in the matter of disinvestment of the Laxmi Vilas Palace hotel in Udaipur.The then under secretary, Vijay Kumar Verma, was summoned for interrogation in the case.

JODHPUR : The CBI has begun investigation in the matter of disinvestment of the Laxmi Vilas Palace hotel in Udaipur. The then under secretary, Vijay Kumar Verma, was summoned for interrogation in the case.
"The then under secretary Vijay Kumar Verma was summoned on Monday for interrogation. We have recorded his statement and would follow with recording of the statements of others in the case," said a CBI official.
Verma is currently serving as the consultant for Bharat Hotels group, to whom the property was sold.
It may be recalled that the agency had registered a case against the then secretary, disinvestment, government of India; the then MD of New Delhi based private firm; proprietor of Mumbai-based private firm; an authorised representative of New Delhi based private hotel and unknown officials/private persons under sections 120 B r/w 420 of IPC & 13(2) r/w 13(1) (d) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 and substantive offences thereof, on the allegations in the matter of disinvestment of Laxmi Vilas Palace hotel, Udaipur, a unit of ITDC (government of India) at much below the prescribed DLC rates, resulting in huge monetary loss to the government.
It was alleged that during the period 2001-02, M/s Laxmi Vilas Palace hotel, Udaipur was first drastically undervalued and then sold/ disinvested to a private hotel situated at Barakhamba road, New Delhi at a price of Rs 7.52 crores (approx). However, as per then DLC rates of the land on which the said hotel was situated was allegedly, Rs151 crores (approx). This way, a loss of Rs143.48 crore (approx) was caused to the ITDC.
After registration of the case, searches were conducted at four places in New Delhi and Mumbai and incriminating documents related to the case have been recovered.
