Karate lessons for self-defence trainers

At the inauguration, the karate experts from Japan demonstrated several different moves they would be teaching the women self-defence trainers.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (crime against women) Varsha Sharma said, “The women trainers are well trained in self-defence techniques, which they have been using to train women and schoolchildren to keep themselves safe in public spaces.

However, to train the trainers better, we have decided to start karate classes for them. If they are trained better, they will be able to teach the stronger techniques to woman and ensure a better and safer environment in the city.”

The karate experts include Vishal Jaiswal, Neetu Saini, Anish Khan and Nisha Kumari. After the training programme, the SPUWC will be deployed in plainclothes in areas where crime against women and girls are high. These include Kotla Mubarak, Munirka, Mukherjee Nagar, South Campus, Gandhi Vihar, Lajpat Nagar, Malviya Nagar, Sunlight Colony, Mahipalpur, university Metro stations and on DTC bus routes where women and girls travel the most.

“Our girls set out after 8 am to train women and children in schools or colleges and keeping a tab on public buses during the morning and evening rush hour. We will have to, therefore, take time out between

6 am and 8 am everyday for the karate classes in the DDA Squash and Badminton Stadium near Gargi College,” Inspector Shivani, team leader of the SPUWC, told Newsline.
