Registrar, warden thrashed my son, father tells cops

Meanwhile the suicide has unnerved thousands of students in more than a dozen such institutes dotting the highway from Ghaziabad to Meerut.

While officials at a private engineering institute in Meerut continue to deny that a second year BTech student committed suicide because of alleged ragging, the boy’s father, in his statement to the police, has said that his son had objected to a group of students ragging a new batch of juniors, following which he was brutally beaten.

In his statement recorded under section 161 CrPC at the Partapur police station, Sanjeev Kumar also claimed that his son, Kalpit Tyagi, was beaten by the registrar and the chief warden of the institute in his presence on Friday, and that both had threatened to rusticate him.

“He felt humiliated and all that happened in my presence which could be the reason for him deciding to take the extreme step,” Kumar said.

The institute management has suspended the registrar and the chief warden while the 12 students who have been named in the FIR have been expelled. The police have only arrested the chief warden so far.

“Our investigation is ongoing and we will include ragging sections if we find evidence. The chief warden has been arrested. More arrests will be made soon,” Surendra Nath, the in-charge of the Partapur police station told The Indian Express.

Festive offer

Meanwhile the suicide has unnerved thousands of students in more than a dozen such institutes dotting the highway from Ghaziabad to Meerut. Protesting against the police’s decision to not include ragging sections in the case, irate students took out a candle march on Sunday night. The BJP’s youth wing also burnt effigies of the registrar and the chief warden at Commissioner Crossing.

The father, a resident of Bijnor district, said “I have nothing to lose now and I will make sure that my son gets justice.”
