Israel blasts a Syrian drone out of the sky over the Golan Heights

Israel blasted a Syrian drone out of the sky as it flew over the Golan Heights on Sunday.

Military officials in Jerusalem are unsure whether the unmanned aircraft was aimed at Israel or accidentally wandered off course.

Investigators are trying to determine whether the drone carried explosives or cameras that could have photographed sensitive military installations, according to the Haaretz newspaper.

They’re also trying to figure out who owned the drone — the Syrian government or rebel forces trying to overthrow it.

Regardless, the Israeli Defense Forces “will respond to any breach of Israel’s sovereignty,’’ Lt. Col Peter Lerner said.

During the 50-day Gaza operation, the IDF shot down two of several drones sent airborne by Hamas. Haaretz described them as “created with technology . . . transferred by Iran.’’

The latest drone was launched from an area in Syria where battles have been raging between government and rebel forces. It was brought down by a US-made Patriot missile.

Just last week, a terror group linked to al Qaeda took control of the Syrian side of the Golan border crossing to Israel.
