A Grant Road family that had reached Girgaum Chowpatty on Saturday with great fanfare to bid adieu to their Ganesh idol were shocked when three youths demanded money from them over permission for immersion. The family lodged a police complaint and got the trio arrested.

An officer from DB Marg police station said that Ramesh Ramchandra Gauda and his family were done with the pooja and aarti and were about to enter the sea when three men, later identified as Arun Kale, Ganesh Pawar and Rama Pawar, approached them.

"The persons told the Gauda family that the idol could not be immersed without their permission. The trio also threatened the family and demanded Rs 2000 to allow them for visarjan," said an officer from DB Marg police station, requesting anonymity.

Undaunted by their intimidation tactics, Gauda filed a police complaint. "We found out about the whereabouts of the trio and apprehended them. They have been booked on charges of extortion and threatening. The family also happily immersed their idol the same day," the officer said, adding that all the men are residents of Grant Road area.

This is not the first case of con men giving a festive touch to their ingenuity. The Nagpada police had on Friday arrested four history-sheeters for demanding 'protection money' from officials of various Ganpati mandal in Kamathipura area.
