Silchar: Returning officer of Cachar district in an order has stopped implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) in the areas under Silchar and Lakhipur assembly constituencies.
In an order addressed to bankers in these areas, returning officer Gokul Mohan Hazarika said implementation of the scheme in the two segments has been stopped under the provisions of code of conduct of the Election Commission of India.
The scheme will be resumed soon after the election process is completed, he added.
By-election will be held in both Silchar and Lakhipur along with Jamunamukh in the state on September 13. Counting will be held on September 16.
Jan Dhan Yojana received a massive response in this part of Assam from day one after launching of the scheme by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 28. Banks were crowded with poor people eager to open their bank accounts under the scheme. In Silchar, a large number of people expressed dismay after they had to return from the banks on Saturday under the fresh order of the authorities to stop the scheme temporarily.
Meanwhile, the code of conduct of the Election Commission also deprived students of Silchar from interacting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi online on Teachers’ Day on September 5.
Silchar and Imphal were the two towns in northeast selected for the purpose — a programme to be aired live on nationalized TV channels and radio. Now, Silchar has been replaced by Tinsukia in Assam under this programme, an official said.
