KAMPALA- Former Finance commissioner Maxwell Adea has petitioned President Museveni to prevail over a case of alleged aggravated human trafficking against him citing falsehoods.

In a letter dated August 2 copied to the Director of Public Prosecutions and the High Court Registrar, Dr Adea alleges that the charges against him are malicious because the complainants and victims ‘were forced to sign statements to implicate him.’

“Others were promised free education or better schools if they implicate me in the statements and as long as I am in Luzira Prison. The alleged girls were mainly got from Karamoja sub-region and not from my home,” Dr Adea wrote a letter attached to a confession in which two people described him as a relative of the alleged victim.

According to a document attached to the petition, the victim’s parents allegedly confessed that their daughter was given to Dr Adea with their full consent without any deception by Dr Adea.

“I consented to giving my daughter to Dr Adea to take to school and she was taken to Kazo Secondary School. I visited her after three weeks and she told me she was studying well. She never told me of any of the allegations purported to Dr Maxwell [Adea] and now I am worried about her safety because ever since he was arrested, her whereabouts are not known,” Ms Ketty Adong wrote.

Dr Adea is on remand at Luzira prison pending hearing of his application for bail slated for today and hearing of prosecution witnesses set for October 1.

His trial failed last Tuesday following a violent move protesting the hearing before Justice Elizabeth Nahamya forcing her to withdraw from the case. The case has now been allocated to Justice Moses Mukiibi.

Prosecution led by Ms Joan Kagezi alleges that in January, Dr Adea by means of deception, recruited, transported and harboured a 17-year-old from Ngai, Oyam District to Kawempe, Kampala for the purposes of sexual exploitation which is contrary to the law.

Dr Adea who denies any wrong doing, lamented that his stay in prison has caused trauma and fear in his family and that his children have dropped out of school due to lack of school fees.

“I am a known diabetic and hypotensive patient and the prison facility has no specialised medical personnel to manage my condition. I am the sole bread winner for my family. I am unable to afford even legal costs,” he wrote.
