The first concrete house with mosaic flooring in Nagercoil, built by yesteryear comedian Nagercoil Sudalaimuthu Krishnan (NSK), who delivered messages of social reforms in humorous undertones in over 120 films, is in a dilapidated condition. The house, Madhuram Bhavan, was named after his wife.

When NSK was deep in debts, former Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran saved the house from a certain auction and also helped in the marriage of NSK’s two daughters. The man, who made the Tamil people laugh with his intelligent humour, suffered a lot in his personal life.

The comedian has statues near Manimedai in Nagercoil and Chennai. NSK was a philanthropist till his death. Today is his death anniversary.

NSK’s grandson N.S.K. K. Raja (35) recalled here on Friday that the comedian conducted around 1,800 charity shows to raise funds for many worthy social causes such as providing relief to people affected by a storm in Kerala. He helped not only people he knew, but also those unknown to him. NSK raised funds through charity shows to bail out the family of Pattukkotai Azhagiri when his family was struggling to make both ends meet.

Having done a Diploma in Film Technology, Mr. Raja has acted in a lead role in a film, “Nagarika Komaali.”

He is working as an Assistant Director for a film in Chennai.

Mr. Raja recalled an incident about NSK. A grand function was organised to honour him in Nagercoil. A decorated chair was put for him at the dais. But instead of sitting on the chair, NSK chose to sit with the spectators on the sand.

Mr. Raja said M.K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar had performed at his house.

NSK was born on November 29, 1908 and died on August 30, 1957.
