Despite the
Sivaramakrishnan committee's recommendations,
Vijayawada seems to be the favourite location for the
new capital, if one goes by the number of representations endorsing the city.
Of the 5,380 responses received by the committee, 663 were in favour of Vijayawada, followed by 507 for Visakhapatnam, 372 for Guntur and 360 for Kurnool. Vijayawada-Guntur region together received 1,156 votaries.
Meanwhile, Ongole got 265 votaries followed by Rajahmundry 139, Tirupati 113, Donakonda in Prakasam district 116 and others 1,037.
Some even suggested setting up of two capitals— Vijayawada-Guntur and Kurnool— to cater to the needs of the two regions. The dual capital plan had several votaries. While some suggested Visakhapatnam and Kurnool, others suggested that the summer capital be Ongole and winter capital Kurnool.
Others suggestions for the capital included Chirala Vanpic area, Nagarjunasagar area, borders of Rayalaseema and Andhra regions like Markapuram-Yerragondapalem-Cumbum, and new Tirupati, partly Chittoor and Nellore districts.
