A man was reportedly burned alive by local residents in Bogor, West Java after being caught red-handed in a motorcycle theft attempt.
The victim, Henky Hermansyah, was also reportedly carrying a firearm during the attempted theft and fired shots into a group of people who tried to apprehend him as he attempted to escape with the stolen motorcycle.
'Residents who caught him were furious after the victim attempted to flee by firing shots, one of which grazed a resident in the process. After he was caught by the angry mob, they set him on fire before he could be brought to the police,' Bogor Police criminal unit head Adj Comr Didik Purwanto said on Friday as quoted by tempo.co.
The police managed to confiscate the victim's firearm and four bullets, as well as two T-shaped wrenches. Didik added that the victim's charred body was taken to Kramat Jati Police Hospital in East Jakarta for an autopsy.
The incident occurred around 10:30 a.m., when the victim tried to steal a notable resident's motorcycle in broad daylight. When the resident called for help, a mob instantly formed and began chasing the thief, finally catching up with him when he was refueling the stolen motorcycle.
Several residents allegedly tried to bring the thief to the police before another group of residents blocked a car, knowing the thief was inside. The thief was then dragged into the middle of a field and set on fire.
Didik explained that the police were still investigating the residents' actions, as well as questioning witnesses in the case. (dyl)
