Irish duo Hurley and Dunne give their side hope

Gary Hurley helped keep alive Great Britain & Ireland's hopes of recording a first St. Andrew's Trophy victory

Irish stars Gary Hurley and Paul Dunne played a major role yesterday in helping Great Britain and Ireland keep alive their hopes of recording a first St Andrews Trophy victory in three matches against Continent of Europe at Barseback, in Sweden.

Hurley and Dunne halved their foursomes match and both won their singles as the teams ended day one with honours even at six points apiece. The Irish couple were never up in their foursomes against Darius Van Driel and Albert Eckhardt, but grabbed a share of the spoils.

But in the Hurley-Eckardt match, the West Waterford man was never behind and closed out the game 3&1. Dunne, from Greystones, defeated Tim Gornik 2&1.

In the Jacques Leglise Trophy match, the boys of Great Britain and Ireland are trailing their Continent of Europe counterparts 7-5.
