Silchar: The surrendered militants of disbanded DHD (Nunisa) and DHD (Jewel Garlosa) on Friday staged a dharna in Haflong, the district headquarters of Dima Hasao, seeking an early implementation of a memorandum of settlement (MoS), they had signed a couple of years ago.
Over 1,000 members of the erstwhile militant groups started an agitation on Friday morning and also sent a memorandum to the state government and the Centre placing their charter of demands.
The members, under the banner of Dima Halali Welfare Society, continued their dharna till afternoon.
The agitators alleged that the government was in no mood to implement the provisions of a MoS signed by the Centre, the state government and the representatives of DHD (N) and DHD (J). The surrendered Dimasa militants had signed it on October 8, 2012.
They said the MoS paved the way for creation of a territorial council for the district. They said the MoS ensured that the hill district would be freed from the clutches of militancy after decades of fear.
The protesters demanded that all the surrendered militants should be rehabilitated without further delay. They also demanded ex-gratia for the next of kin of the militants who died while fighting with the security forces.
They wanted early implementation of Lumding-Silchar broad gauge project and Silchar-Saurastra East-West road project, which run through Dima Hasao district.
