Making a departure from the past, the Congress in Madhya Pradesh installed idols of lord Ganesh at the state headquarters in Bhopal and the district offices across the state on Friday.
The party insisted the move had nothing to do with the “pro-minority tag” that was reportedly cited by the A K Antony committee as one of the reasons for its humiliating electoral defeat.
“I don’t know and don’t want to comment why it was not done before but as long as I am there (as PCC chief) the tradition will continue,’’ Congress president Arun Yadav told The Indian Express. “I don’t understand why so much hype is being created about it. The BJP does not have a monopoly over gods.’’
While the BJP regularly celebrates all major Hindu festivals, the Congress had so far avoided it fearing the practice might dent its secular image. The party justified the move saying its leaders and workers were taking part in celebrations either at home or in public places.
Though no written communication was sent to district units from the PCC headquarters, the instructions were conveyed orally.
A spokesman said he did not remember the party having celebrated the 10-day festival for last 25 years. One office-bearer was deputed to choose an idol and another was given the responsibility to organise puja every morning and evening for the next 10 days.
“It’s good if they have done it,’’ BJP spokesman Vijendra Sisodia said.
