Prosecutors reveal gruesome details in Miss. girl's murder

GULFPORT, Miss.--A 5-year-old girl was sexually assaulted and strangled before her death in July, reports CBS affiliate WLOX.

Alberto Julio Garcia is charged with capital murder in the death of Janaya Thompson. During a court hearing Friday, prosecutors revealed that a crime lab matched DNA evidence found on Janaya's body with Garcia's DNA.

Prosecutors also revealed Janaya died hanging from a bathroom window by a sock. Her body was found inside an abandoned trailer near her home about 12 hours after a massive search began.

Prosecutors said Friday that Garcia told investigators that the night after the assault, he went home and took a shower. While he was in the shower, Janaya's family knocked on his door and asked if he had seen the missing girl.

Garcia told investigators he then joined in the search for Janaya.

The courtroom was packed with supporters for the family, but Janaya's parents were not present.

Another man, Julian Casper Gray, is still considered a person of interest in the case, and is being held on an unrelated charge. More charges could be on the way in the case.
