FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- New England Patriots tight end Tim Wright did not have a lot of time -- roughly 48 hours from the announcement of the trade that brought him to New England -- to prepare for Thursday's preseason finale against the New York Giants. Wright made the most of his short window to get ready for the game.

"I think the big thing for him and for the rest of the team for us is just that chance we had to have him actually play in our system," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said. "It was an abbreviated way of doing it. It's a lot better than next week being the first time that all those things happen."

"There were things that happened during the game on the field, on the sideline, substitutions, on the bench in between series, communication, all those things, snap count, he heard the quarterback audible, adjustments being made on the sideline, all those things which you know are part of the game. He only knew a handful of plays, but overall I thought he handled the situation pretty well."

Wright played in 43 of 70 offensive snaps and finished with four catches for 43 yards, a productive night for such a quick turnaround.

More impressively, Wright demonstrated his football intelligence, which quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo praised after the game.

"I think probably what Jimmy was referring to and I think we saw it as a coaching staff was just [Wright] was able to absorb a lot of information in a short amount of time and go out there and function in the game," Belichick said.

"It certainly wasn't perfect. Formations, and the routes and so forth -- there is certainly a lot of fine-tuning that needs to be done. He picked up a lot pretty quickly, and when he got into the game, he didn't forget it."

Wright showed his adaptability, but he still has a lot of work to do. It is a good sign that Wright can learn on the fly.

"Sometimes, it's one thing to sit in a meeting and go over it and feel like, yeah, you've got it [or] OK, you hear this, you are going to do that," Belichick said. "It's another thing to go out there and actually do it full speed in a game situation."

With the preseason in the books, Belichick emphasized a clean slate for every player.

"Now this week, he [Wright] will be starting at the beginning, like everyone else will, for our game plan and preparation for Miami," Belichick said. "We will just take it day by day and see how it goes."
