Deal with World Bank for Mizoram road project

The link to Bangladesh will facilitate greater bilateral trade and access to the Port of Chittagong.

A $107-million  credit line signed between Mizoram, the Centre and the World Bank Thursday is expected to link the Northeast’s southern most state with Chittagong port and provide deeper penetration into Myanmar, a statement from the international body said.

The Mizoram State Roads II-Regional Transport Connectivity Project comes about half a decade after work began on a road and waterway route that will link Mizoram with Sittwe port in Myanmar’s Rakhine state through the Kaladan river, a project expected to lead to the landlocked Northeast being able to access the Bay of Bengal.

“The link to Bangladesh will facilitate greater bilateral trade and access to the Port of Chittagong — the nearest shipping port for the northeastern region of India. The link to the border with Myanmar will facilitate connectivity to Myanmar and the rest of East Asia and beyond,” a statement said. The project will finance the building of 91 km of roads, including a 22-km section linking Lunglei, the state’s second biggest town with Bangladesh border; a 27.5-km stretch between another major town called Champhai with the border-crossing with Myanmar; and a  41.7-km north-south stretch that will connect with border roads leading towards Bangladesh in the west and Myanmar ‘s Arakan region in the south. “Another 330 km of road works may be considered for a follow-on project or additional financing,” it added.
