Arsenal star Santi Cazorlas has admitted Calum Chambers "has surprised him for good" at the kick-off to the season - while he also heaped praise on Chilean international Alexis Sanchez.

The 19-year-old has impressed since his £16m move to the Emirates Stadium earlier this summer, replacing Per Mertesacker at the heart of the Arsenal defence while earning a first call-up to the England squad.

"Calum Chambers has surprised me for good. He is very young and I knew he was playing for Southampton last season and that he also played few games at a high level," Cazorla revealed to Arsenal's official website.

"But you always have the high expectations over hot prospects like him. And honestly up until today he's surprised me for good in training and also in the games we have played so far. With him I'm sure we'll have a quality defender for the future."

The Spaniard also claims Sanchez will be a very important acquisition for Arsenal after the Chilean scored a crucial goal in the 1-0 victory over Besiktas to qualify for the group stages of the Champions League.

"He can play in several positions at front, he's already played in the right wing and also as a centre-forward," he said. "He'll provide us with variety in attack, with his winning mentality and also with his self-demanding spirit. He'll transmit a lot to the team as well.

"He has the conditions to succeed here at Arsenal. If he managed to do so at Udinese and also at Barcelona, why couldn't he do so here in the Premier League? He's a player that wants to improve every day.

"He [is not simply satisfied] with what he's achieved. He wants to keep succeeding and he'll be an important player for Arsenal."
