ational flag carrier Garuda Indonesia has announced the launch of intra-Sulawesiand intra- West Nusa Tenggara routes on Sept. 1 to enhance regional airconnectivity in the country.

The carrier is set to connect Makassar in South Sulawesi and Kolaka and Baubau, both in Southeast Sulawesi, and Mataram and Sumbawa Besar in West NusaTenggara.

The three routes will be served by a French-Italian twin-engine turbopropshort-haul regional airliner Avions de Transport Regional ATR 72-600 with acapacity of 70 passengers.

Garuda sales and marketing director Erik Meijer said the opening of the new routes showed the carrier's commitment to expanding its network across the archipelago.

"It is also our commitment to help spur the nation's economic growth by enhancing air connectivity in the regions," Erik said in a statement on Friday.

He also said the new routes were an answer to rising travel demand in eastern Indonesia, which was due to improvements in regional economies over the past few years.

The airline will fly between Makassar and Kolaka and Makassar and Baubau once a day and four times a week on the Mataram-Sumbawa Besar route.

In addition, he said Garuda would increase the Makassar-Luwuk flight frequency from once to twice daily as from Sept.1.

On Aug. 26, the airline signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Timor Leste flag carrier Air Timor S.A. in Dili.

The MoU was signed by Garuda president director Emirsyah Satar and Air Timor director Belchior Francisco Bento Alves Pereira and witnessed by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Timor Leste Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao.(nfo)
