The Justice Mukul Mudgal probe committee is likely to seek a two-month extension to submit its final report on the 2013 Indian Premier League match-fixing and betting scandal. The Supreme Court had set an August-end deadline for the panel to submit its report.
A special Supreme Court bench will hear the case on September 1. The duration of extension for the Mudgal panel is likely to be decided. On Friday, the inquiry committee submitted an interim report on the scandal in a sealed envelope. The envelope is expected to be open on Monday.
A number of issues will be discussed on Monday. Board of Control for Cricket in India's president-in-exile N. Srinivasan has pleaded the court to recall its order to stay away from Board activities. Srinivasan's son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan has been indicted for betting in the scandal. Gurunath was the team principal of Chennai Super Kings till last year.
The BCCI elections are due in September and Srinivasan is coming to the end of his year-long extension. According to the BCCI constitution, Srinivasan is eligible for another term as president but only if he is nominated by the zone whose turn it is to put up a candidate. This year it is East Zone's turn to nominate a president. Srinivasan can only be nominated if the Supreme Court allows him to do so.
Meanwhile, the Cricket Association of Bihar, whose PIL had triggered the entire IPL scam case since June last year, has once again challenged the BCCI's decision to nominate Srinivasan as ICC chairman.
The CAB lawyers are asking how did secretary Sanjay Patel and stand-in president Shivlal Yadav nominate Srinivasan when he was struck down as BCCI president by the court. Interestingly, the Supreme Court has never disallowed Srinivasan from taking up an ICC post saying the matter had nothing to do with the IPL scandal. Srinivasan was unanimously elected ICC chairman in June this year.
The Mudgal panel is expected to speak to some Indian cricketers once they return from the tour of England. Names of players representing Chennai Super Kings are reportedly under investigation. The Mudgal panel includes advocates L Nageswara Rao, Nilay Dutta and senior IPS officer B.B. Mishra.
