Matches to watch

Sara Errani (13) vs. Venus Williams (19)

Williams is back in the third round of the U.S. Open for the first time since 2010. Williams, 34, is the oldest woman left in the draw.

After losing the first set to Kimiko Date-Krumm on Monday, Williams came back in her first round match. Two days later, Williams beat Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland in straight sets.

Errani has won both of her 2014 U.S. Open matches in straight sets. On Monday, she beat Kirsten Flipkens, and on Wednesday night, beat Australia's Anastasia Rodionova.

Sam Groth vs. Roger Federer (2)

On Tuesday, Federer beat Marinko Matosevic in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (4). Last year, Federer lost to 19th-seeded Tommy Rebredo in the round of 16. Since the French Open, Federer is 20-2.

Groth, ranked 104, beat Albert Ramos-Vinolas in his first round match. Groth holds the unofficial record for the world's fastest serve, which he hit in 2012 at a Challenger in South Korea.

Maria Sharapova (5) vs. Sabine Lisicki (26)

Earlier this season, Sharapova claimed her second French Open title and fifth grand slam title. She was forced to withdraw from last year's U.S. Open with a shoulder injury. After losing the first set in her second-round match against Alexandra Dulgheru, Sharapova won the next two sets 6-3, 6-2 to advance.

Lisicki set the world record for fastest serve by a woman earlier in 2014 with a 131 mph serve at the Bank of the West Classic. She defeated Madison Brengle in straight sets to reach the third round of the U.S. Open.
