THE University of the Western Cape’s Science Learning Centre for Africa (SLCA) has opened four new science centres at schools in the Breede River and Overberg region.

The schools are WA Rossouw Primary in Montagu, Masakhane High School in Robertson, FJ Conradie Primary in De Doorns and Paulus Joubert High School in Paarl.

The four centres were opened by UWC rector Brian O’Connell and director of Garden Cities Archway Foundation Myrtle February.

Three more science learning centres are to be opened this year. In total 23 centres are to be established.

SLCA director Professor Shaheed Hartley said: “We have to start with the basics in terms of supporting teachers to regain confidence to teach science with an advanced level of understanding, knowledge and teaching skills. Similarly, we have to be creative in providing pupils with opportunities that will draw their interest and willingness to learn.”

Hartley said developing a culture of science teaching and learning would make a good contribution in improving the National Senior Certificate.

The SLCA has already won several awards for its far-reaching support programmes to improve teaching and learning.
