Docking accident in Vancouver
The Transportation Safety Board semt two investigators to Port Metro Vancouver after the "CMA CGM Attila" struck a dock in the morning of Aug 27, 2014.
The ship was docking at the DP World Centerm container terminal near Crab Park in the Downtown Eastside and had come from Seattle when the accident happened at 6 a.m.
The vessel sustained about a one-metre-long puncture to one of its ballast tanks amidships on the starboard side.
The tank was empty and there was no pollution. The dock was also damaged.
The vessel was built in 2011 and currently flies under the flag of Malta. Before it arrived in Vancouver, it was in Seattle, Singapore and Beilun, China. The size is 321 x 43 m.
The captain has been interviewed; the next steps are to contact the B.C. coast pilot on board and to analyze the ship's voice data recorder for information such as speed and direction.
Two tugs were also assisting the vessel during the docking.
The ship was required to remain at berth.
UPDATE
The container ship that struck the dock at a Vancouver port early yesterday morning is undergoing repairs to its damaged hull. The vessel, “CMA CGM Attila”, will likely remain moored at Vancouver’s Centerm container facility until at least Sunday while the work is carried out, according to sources at the port.
