Glascott Landscape & Civil was awarded the construction of a
traditional Chinese garden in Canberra.
Developed by the Beijing Historic Relic Construction Company, the
Chinese garden was a gift from sister city Beijing to commemorate Canberra’s
centenary year celebrations in 2013. The building of the garden was commenced
in May this year.
Being built on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin in the Lennox Gardens,
the Canberra Chinese Garden is located across the Lake from the National Museum
of Australia and right next to Nara Park, which houses Canberra’s
Japanese Gardens and the Jewish monument.
The Glascott team is not only managing the construction of the garden but
is also overseeing a team of 30 Chinese artisans who were flown in to help
build the structures, paving and rock gardens as well as install the sculptures
and furniture.
Mr Bill Carter, Glascott Landscape & Civil Project Manager said that
they looked forward to seeing the end result of their combined efforts.
Spread over an area of approximately 5,000 square metres, the new
Chinese garden will feature meandering paths for visitors to view the
Chinese stone sculptures while a Chinese pavilion will offer a space for quiet
reflection with an expansive view across the lake. Traditional glazed and
decorated tiles and panels are being used to maintain an authentic look. Existing
facilities such as wheelchair access and better bike path access are also being
improved in the garden.
The Canberra Chinese Garden is due to open in October this year, and
will not only be a symbol of the strong ties between the two cities, but also provide
a beautiful and cultural outdoor space for the people of Canberra.
