CHANDIGARH: Haryana Janhit Congress chief Kuldeep Bishnoi on Thursday called off his party’s alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party in Haryana for the forthcoming assembly polls, alleging betrayal by the saffron party, and announced tie-up with former Union minister and Congress rebel Venod Sharma’s Jan Chetna Party.

“I am dumping BJP as it is not a trustworthy partner,” Bishnoi, son of former chief minister Bhajan Lal, said in Chandigarh. Bishnoi, a former Lok Sabha member from Hisar, said the BJP had breached terms of the alliance agreed in 2011 to share assembly tickets and post of chief minister after winning the polls.

The seat-sharing arrangement with Jan Chetna Party is yet to be decided, Bishnoi said, adding, “The modalities will be worked out in the coming days.”

Bishnoi blamed BJP for his loss from Hisar in the recent general elections. Although BJP president Amit Shah has termed the rival INLD “a party of goons” at a recent rally, BJP never restricted leaders of its ally Shiromani Akali Dal from canvassing for INLD’s candidate Dushyant Chautala during the Lok Sabha Polls.

“Both INLD and BJP had joined hands to ensure my loss,” Bishnoi said. He said he was made to announce Narendra Modi’s rally before Lok Sabha polls at Fatehabad, but it was called off two days before the scheduled date. BJP opposed strong candidates like Venod Sharma and Chander Mohan (Bishnoi’s brother) from contesting on HJC tickets, he said.

The estranged partners had failed to reach consensus on issues of seat-sharing and post of chief minister. While HJC was adamant on the terms of alliance struck in 2011, the BJP offered limited seats to the regional party. After the HJC lost on both Lok Sabha seats it contested as per alliance, the BJP sought new terms of the agreement. Blaming the BJP, Bishnoi said that he had entered into a written agreement with the BJP that clearly allotted half of the assembly tickets to the HJC.
