BANGALORE: The ranks of fugitives-in-khaki are only swelling. Suspended KG Nagar police inspector CED Nagaraj and two constables are now on the run after they were booked for illegal detention and torture of a cabbie who committed suicide last week.
Nagaraj is the latest in a line of police officers on the run. Suspended HAL police inspector R Rajesh has been absconding for over 10 months after an extortion case was booked against him.
Two months ago, sub-inspector Yoganand stopped coming to work after Delhi police began hunting for him in connection with a rape case. Yoganand has been missing since.
“If you can find inspector Rajesh, please tell us,” is the refrain one hears from senior police officers when asked about progress in the case against him.
He and the constables were later suspended and a case under sections 341, 342, 394, 506 with 34 IPC were booked against all of them. While the constables were arrested, Rajesh went missing.
Two months ago, sub inspector Yoganand went missing after he was wanted in a rape case registered against him in Delhi by a Delhi-based woman. Yoganand became acquainted with the woman when he was in Indiranagar police station. He began an affair and even “unofficially” married her but later dumped her in Delhi and is now absconding. The woman has charged him with cheating and rape after promising to marry her through he is already married.

52 cops in the dock
According to information obtained under Right to Information Act, 19 city police officers and personnel have been booked by Lokayukta police under the Prevention of Corruption Act. Thirty-three police officers and personnel face criminal cases under various sections of the IPC. These numbers do not include three KG Halli personnel booked for custodial death recently.
At the Cubbon Park station, two constables were booked for looting a Rolex watch, laptop, Rs 2 lakh in cash and banned Red Sanders worth around Rs 13.35 lakh from two Chinese nationals. The policemen reportedly said they had kept their bosses informed about the incident. Based on their version, no action was initiated yet against suspension of senior police officers at Cubbon Park station. While some suspended officers and personnel are attending their duty some are yet to get posting, though there is apprehension they could destroy evidence, leading to their acquittal.
