Chennai: Tamil Nadu has so far received five percent more than normal rainfall this southwest monsoon season while the country is lagging behind by 18 per cent. With a month remaining, weathermen expect the state to end up with a slightly above normal rainfall this SWM season. Tamil Nadu is expected to get 12 cm mean rainfall in September.
Overall, the country has received 56.6 cm area weighted rainfall as against the normal of 69.3 cm, thereby recording a deficit of minus 18 per cent this southwest monsoon season starting June 1 ending August 28.
While south interior Karnataka has recorded excess rainfall, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala and Rayalseema regions have received normal rainfall in south India. Tamil Nadu has recorded five percent above normal cumulative rainfall at 20.4 cm as against normal of 19.4 cm in the southwest monsoon season.
“Usually when the country experiences below normal rainfall, Tamil Nadu will receive a little above normal rainfall in the southwest monsoon season. We are seeing the same trend now. We hope the state will receive good rainfall in September also,” said S. B. Thampi, deputy director general of Meteorology, Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai.
According to him, the state receives about 32 cm cumulative rainfall during the southwest monsoon season. “Our main rainy season is northeast, when we are expected to get 44 cm rainfall. We hope the NE monsoon season will also be equally productive like the SW monsoon season, as it is crucial to rejuvenate the ground water level and for storage of water in reservoirs for use during summer months,” he added.
