Third seed Jan O Jorgensen of Denmark withdrew from the Badminton World Championships on Thursday due to knee injuries.

Jorgensen said he felt a tear under his knee cap in the match against Chou Tien Chen from Chinese Taipei, and he knew right away that something was wrong.

After struggling through his first game with 9-21, Jorgensen received treatment but that proved to be useless. He retired from the second game at 4-9.

"The whole dream of winning and playing the World Championships suddenly burst," the depressed 26-year-old told a press briefing shortly after, with eyes being red from crying.

"I've prepared so well and this was the worst thing that could ever happen. It was really tough not to be able to present what you've wanted. I am very sad," he said.

Also on Thursday, top seed Lee Chong Wee of Malaysia swept into the quarter-finals after beating Scott Evans of Ireland in two straight sets. Lee will meet Chinese player Wang Zhengming on Friday at quarter-finals.

China's men's single top gun, second seed Chen Long, also advanced to the quarter-finals after an easy win of Marc Zwiebler of Germany earlier on the same day. Endite
