Restaurant review: The Silk Road (Pan-Asian)
The Silk Road is the East Asian specialty restaurant of Eastin Hotel Ahmedabad Hotel. Named for the Silk Road by the sea linking China with South-East Asia and Japan through maritime and overland routes, it offers dishes from Chinese, Burmese, Indonesian, Thai, Malaysian, Vietnamese, Japanese and other cuisines.
DECOR Though it is an oriental world specialty restaurant, The Silk Road’s décor is formal and minimalistic rather than over-the-top thematic.
Sitting on table counters built around the Sushi Bar or Teppanyaki Grill is part of the attraction as you can watch different sushis being formed and the drama of the chef preparing the teppayanki platters on iron griddles. There is also a separate glassed-in vegetarian kitchen area. Another key feature of the restaurant is that there is a wrap around verandah where you can dine alfresco under the stars when the weather is good.
FOOD The highlight of the restaurant is the Teppanyaki — there are three pre-fixed menus depending on what you like or how much you would like to pay. If you prefer ala carte, Dim Sum is a section of the menu dedicated to dumplings — they offer Wotip (steamed), Kothey (fried) or Sui Mui (steamed with open top) with a choice of vegetarian, chicken or prawn fillings wrapped in dough skins that are nice and thin. They also have various forms of Sushi — Temaki (try soft shelled crab tempura temaki or the vegetarian temaki with avocado, asparagus, lettuce and cucumber), Spicy Tuna/Salmon Maki Sushi, Nigiri Shashimi (salmon, tuna, mackerel or squid) or any of their signature Sushis combined with different ingredients and sauces/condiments (Teriyaki if you like a sweetish taste, Orange Blossom, Spicy, etc). The pick of the soups is the delicious Singapore Laksa which has a coconut curry base with glass noodles and an impressive amount of seafood (usually squid, prawn and mussels) or exotic vegetables. The Eight Treasure Soup is a good choice of vegetarians. Among the Japanese mains, the Salmon Teriyaki (if you don’t eat fish, they may make you a chicken, duck or exotic veggies teriyaki) is extremely palatable with the barbecue grill lending it a sheen and texture, and a taste that is slightly but not overwhelmingly sweet. They serve a delectable Thai Green Vegetable Curry with generous amount vegetables and the spicy red or yellow curries (veg/chicken/prawn) are also pretty good. They have limited options for desserts but you could try something different here like a Wassabi Ice-cream.
PLUS AND MINUS The Silk Road has brought many new specialties to Ahmedabad like the teppanyaki menu. However, some of the dishes are expensive and perhaps over-priced. Not all the food at The Silk Road is outstanding but it is much more than acceptable for Ahmedabad considering that many of the dishes it serves are not available elsewhere in the city. The Silk Road caters well for vegetarians with classic salads like Gado-Gado and dishes like Yellow Pumpkin Curry, Mapo Tofu, Burmese Eggplants, Chinese Pak Choi with Black Mushrooms, Sambal Goring Tahu and Vietnamese Tofu Chow Fun. Must Try: Laksa Curry Soup, Salmon Teriyaki, Thai Green Veg Curry, Teppayanki Menu
