INDORE: National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Wednesday has directed to develop green belt along the Khan and Saraswati rivers on lines with Thames river in London or Sabarmati river front in Ahemedabad, Mula or Mutha river developed in the cultural capital of Maharashtra - Pune.
The directive of NGT has put a question mark over the proposed river side corridor on the bank of Khan river, which has already be approved by Union urban development ministry in February.
NGT has directed principal secretary of state urban administration and development department to find out the status of the project and pursue it on urgent basis with union government and appraise the tribunal about the outcome on which further direction would be given.
The direction of NGT has come over a petition filed by social activist Kishor Kodwani about bringing back Khan and Saraswati rivers flowing through the city to life. The rivers have virtually been turned into nallahs with sewer water from all corners of the city being discharged into them.
The petition highlighted the dumping of municipal solid waste and construction debris in the river bed, the river bed itself has become a municipal solid waste dumping site miserably reducing the width of river due to illegal constructions and encroachment within the river beds on their banks.
NGT in its order mentioned that clearing of river beds of Khan and Saraswati have two dimensional problems first waste disposal and dumping of municipal solid waste.
For this NGT has directed IMC and district administration to clear encroachments on the river bed and bank of the rivers by March 31, 2015 and file a compliance report. NGT also directed IMC to ensure no garbage is dumped in Khan and Saraswati rivers. IMC was directed to set up collection centres/dustbins and take steps for door-to-door collection and better disposal of garbage. Municipal commissioner was directed to file an affidavit by March 21, 2015 highlighting the steps taken by them for prevention of further dumping of municipal solid waste and construction debris into the river bed and de-silting of the rivers.
