Grog offences up during Townsville Drink Safe trial
A Queensland Government evaluation shows alcohol-related offences in Townsville's nightclub strip increased under its 'Drink Safe' trial.
Townsville's nightclub strip trialled the project between 2010 and 2013, to try and reduce drunken violence.
A final Government report shows offence rates dropped in the two trial sites in south-east Queensland but increased in Townsville by 1.5 per cent on Friday and Saturday nights.
Assaults against police also rose in Townsville, along with an 18 per cent increase in good order offences.
The report says the city's inconsistent results might be due to limited public transport options and the lack of public toilets in the CBD.
It also suggests fly-in, fly-out workers and Army personnel change the city's dynamic.
Legislation passed this week will see several similar precincts rolled out across the state.
