Special MCOCA court sentences three gangsters for extortion

Mumbai Mirror Bureau

A special Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Court (MCOCA) on Wednesday convicted three gangsters, operating an extortion racket in Kalina, for firing at a hotelier and his neighbour in 2009. The hotelier, who was shot in the chest, survived only because a Rs 5 coin in his pocket bore the bullet’s impact.

Prime convict Sachin Khambe has also been accused of firing at filmmaker Rakesh Roshan in 2000, reportedly at the behest of gangster Abu Salem.

Khambe had demanded Rs 25,000 protection money from Krishna Shetty. Gopal Shetty, a manager in Krishna’s hotel, took the call but did not entertain his demand. On October 1, 2009, Krishna and his friend Nicholas Gomes were sitting outside Shetty’s video parlour in Vakola when the three convicts fired at them while on a motorcycle.

A month after the incident, the Crime Branch cracked the case with the arrest Miranda and Pawar from Maitri Park in Chembur, while they were about to board a bus from Bangalore. The investigation in the case was headed by the then joint commissioner of police, Crime Branch, Rakesh Maria.

Khambe had been operating his extortion business till last year from Nashik Jail, where he was lodged for several cases of murder, attempt to murder and extortion.

In this particular case, special judge A L Pansare sentenced Khambe and his accomplice Vencil Miranda to life imprisonment, while the third gang member, Nitin Pawar, was sentenced to 10 years in prison. They were also fined Rs 50,000 for running an organised crime syndicate. The prosecution led by SPP Lata Cheda examined 54 witnesses to prove the crime.
Khame’s record

Khambe, who worked for Bahrain-based underworld don Ali Budesh and later for the Subhash Singh Thakur gang, has been involved in a series of murders in the city in the late 1990s and early 2000, including the attempt on life of film director and producer Rakesh Roshan on January 21, 2000. He was discharged in the case.

He was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Ziauddin Sheikh, a rival gangster on January 20, 2000. He is presently lodged in the Bangalore Central Prison, as he is facing a trial in a 2006 abduction case.
