We have a day to go for the dna eco-Ganesha celebrations. Like the previous four years, this year, too, one of the key highlights of the event, which is presented by Tata Housing, is to encourage housing societies and individuals to participate in eco-friendly celebrations.

We at dna are committed to keeping the environment clean and the best way to repay mother nature is by not contaminating her by using non-degradable materials. It is for this reason that dna introduced the eco-Ganesha celebrations and subsequently, the awards. Last year, we received 600 entries and this year we expect a lot more.

The best ideas and themes will be selected and will be shortlisted by the dna edit team and then the nominees are interviewed over the phone about their celebrations. The top individuals/housing societies are then felicitated at the dna eco-Ganesha awards, which has seen an exponential growth in the past five years.

Both housing societies and individual households, who use eco-friendly material in their Ganesha idol as well as decorations, can send in pictures and selected entries will be awarded. For details, interested individuals as well as housing society members can register on ecoganesha.money-on-mobile.com.

Apart from the celebrations, you are encouraged to send in ideas on how one can help the environment and also have an environment-friendly celebration. The best ones will be featured in dna, along with a standing chance of winning an award. You can send your entries to bigecoidea@dnaindia.net.

Like last year, this year too, the theme will be based on 'Panch Mahabhoot' – the five great elements of nature. Lord Ganesha is also known as Lord of Nature and its preserver. Therefore, through this initiative, dna wants to signify the importance of respecting the five great elements of nature. Through this theme, dna will emphasise on the need to care for the five great elements that are air (vayu), water (jal), fire (agni), sky (aakash), and earth (bhoomi).

During the celebrations, dna will also have a mall darshan in five of the biggest malls in the city – Fun Republic (Andheri west), Oberoi Mall (Goregaon east), R-City Mall (Ghatkopar west), Viviana Mall (Thane west) and Raghuleela Mega Mall (Kandivali west). While four of the malls will use sadhu mati as the main material to make the Lord Ganesha idols, Oberoi Mall will have a Ganesha idol made from solar flowers.

In addition, there will also be a clean-up drive at Juhu beach a day after we end our celebrations, after the main visarjan day.
